    Project Iemanjá

    A picture for Tomorrow
Place: Island of Ustica – Italy

About the Project

The main objective of Project Iemanja is to create a comprehensive database of photographs and scientific data relating to the flora and fauna of the marine sanctuaries in Italy and worldwide. The photographs and data will be gathered at special events, starting with the one in Ustica that will take place in June 2018. It will mobilize diving teams both on a local and international scale.
The first event will take place in Ustica, an island in the Mediterranea Sea north of Sicily, and will promote the project locally and around the world by inviting interested parties such as the international diving community and universities related to marine conservation.
It also aims to apply local ecological knowledge (LEK) to local fishermen and communities in the region.

Another very important aspect of the project is the work performed on site to engage with local communities, raising awareness about specific problems, promoting support and active participation in order to keep the project moving forwards between each event.
The event will produce both short and long term benefits. In the short term, local tourism will be boosted where the events take place. In the long term, the project will contribute to the ongoing monitoring of the Flora and Fauna in the Marine Reserve Areas.
The Island of Ustica will host the first event. During the event, to facilitate the gathering of information, the participants will be assigned to different categories based on their individual experience and equipment type. The participants may be equipped with a snorkel, a simple GoPro camera or professionally equipped with latest generation diving equipment and cameras.
The people wishing to take part can apply and register in one or more of the following.

Supeface
Diving principiante.
Shallow Apnea Diving
Diving principiante.
Shallow Scuba Diving

Prior to the start of the event, a handbook will be issued to all participants complete with photos and instructions on how to gather and report data concerning the species to be monitored. In the event of a participant coming across a species not listed in the documentation supplied, a photo will have to be taken. The photo will then be analysed by a team of marine biologists and, if appropriate, the new species will be added to the list of subjects to be monitored in the future.
While the divers/photographers are in action, our team will operate an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), fully equipped with instrumentation developed exclusively by AZADIVE, to monitor the working areas gathering important technical information to be added to the database (water depth, temperature, water acidity pH, (ORP), percentage of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and water electric conductivity.
Each photo obtained will be added to the database with its individual datasheet which will include: date, time, GPS position and an accurate description of the photograped species. The methodology described above for the gathering of data will provide, for years to come, access to a very important source of information to accurately evaluate the migration of invasive species and the direct reaction of the local marine flora and fauna to the changes of the water parameters.
In addition, the adopted procedure reduces the data gathering costs because the participants divers/photographers will be volunteers in their full knowledge and agreement that all information obtained and produced will be utilized by the Research Programme.
